Activities

 

From darkness to light, cold to warmth, the landscape of Laponia changes and gives unique experiences.  The Sámi divide the year into eight seasons due to the reindeer and special events in reindeer herding. 

 

LATE-WINTER and SPRING: March – May

During the “spring-winter” (March-April) the reindeer have begun their migration to the summer grazing lands. During the spring (April-May) the reindeer calves are born in the
summer lands and need peace and quiet.

 

Be here when the sunlight returns. Pull up a gleaming mountain char as you are lying on a reindeer hide by a hole in the ice and enjoying the warm rays of the sun and the
sparkling snow. Watch the reindeer as they migrate up to the mountains this time of year, or slide along on skis in the early morning and watch nature come to life.


 

LATE-SPRING and SUMMER:  June - August

During the “spring-summer” (June) the reindeer need peace and quiet to put on weight. During the summer (June-August) marking the calves in the mountains.

 

Hike along the Padjelanta trail, where the cry of the golden plover welcomes you to the rolling, flower-covered mountain meadows. Visit a Sámi summer settlement, go along to
watch the Sámi mark the calves in the light summer nights. Take a tour into majestic Sarek and keep your eyes open for bear, eagles and wolverine.

 

 

LATE-SUMMER - AUTUMN:  September – October

During the “autumn-summer” (August-September) the reindeer are putting on weight to survive the winter.  In the autumn (September-October) the reindeer are separated and some of the young male reindeer are butchered before the mating season begins. 

 

Let the tame draft reindeer carry your pack on a hike in the autumn-colored landscape with distant mountaintops covered with powdered snow. Pick berries and mushrooms, or go along on a moose safari and get a look at the king of the forest.



LATE-WINTER – WINTER: November – March

During the “autumn-winter” (November-December) the butchering the reindeer continues, and the reindeer migrate down to the winter grazing lands. During the winter (December-March) the migration continues; it is important to find good grazing lands under the snow cover.

 

The quiet winter nights are lit up by the crackling Northern Lights. Go on a ski outing through the winter forests, or travel by dog-sled in the awesome white mountain areas. Come along when the reindeer are separated and meet the reindeer herders at work. Or huddle inside around a cosy fireside and enjoy the delicacies of typical dishes from Lapland.
